The Terrifying Next
Most people say they want change, but what they actually want is a slightly improved version of what they already have, because real change means stepping into something you cannot control, predict, or even fully understand, and that is terrifying in a way people don’t like to admit. Walking into the unknown means giving up the illusion that you know who you are going to be next week, next year, or even by the end of the day, and instead accepting that you might fail, look stupid, waste time, or realize you have been wrong about yourself for a long time. That kind of uncertainty strips away the comfort of identity and replaces it with raw exposure, where nothing is guaranteed except the fact that you will have to respond in real time. And most people avoid that, not because they are lazy, but because it forces them to confront how little control they actually have. But here is the catch, the same uncertainty that makes it terrifying is also what makes it meaningful, because anything truly alive, anything that actually changes you, exists on the other side of not knowing.
